Lesson Plan: Navajo Patterns

Introduction: First grade medium range with no disabilities and two students on behavior plans and meds.

 

Content: Patterning as part of the content for elements of art. This lesson ties into Social Studies and the communities studied.

Objective: Given the art work from the navajo sight students will see and be able to understand the use of a shape and repetition to make patterns

Materials: Computer printouts of the navajo designs on pottery and blankets, posters of navajo rugs, video of navajo life, drawing paper, crayons, tempera, chalk pastels

Procedures:

Introduce lesson by tying in community students have studied in southwest. Show artwork and video.

Teacher will tell students what they will do and have hand made samples ready for students to see. Questions will follow regarding where patterns are found. A/P Students will find a pattern in artwok I hold up and describe it to their neighbor.

Then teacher will start showing a demonstration of her own made up pattern using navajo symbols. Next teacher will draw a scene of a navajo wearing a traditional blanket and on the blanket will be a pattern of the symbols.

Students will choose symbols to make up their own patterns. Next students will draw with a crayon 3 people very large with only the back of their head and back showing. On the back students will draw a pattern with 2-3 symbols. Repeat for other two figures.

Closure: Find a pattern on your picture and show it to your neighbor. What makes it a pattern.

Assessment: Hearing the students responses to each other is a way. The other way is reviewing their work as it progresses and when complete.
